The Return of the Ancient Forests

2009

The brief for this project was to utalise materials found on the quarry site to create an environment that would celebrate the first lake of the Penrith Lakes Scheme to be completed in preparation of the land being returned to public use post the extraction process of the Penrith sand and gravel quarry. The design approach was to create an environment that would ignite the imagination and impart both a sense of magic and a sense of place. The materials to hand from the quarry were timber from the original Cumberland plain forests, river stone and sand stone. The concept relates to the re-visioning of the land to a new form, and the return of native species to the site.
